The Unitarian Church of Harrisburg was offered a refresh while respecting its Mid-Century Modern Architecture heritage.
The most visible change is the larger wood platform in the sanctuary with a new larger “Rood Screen” at the massive northern window. This frontispiece is constructed with two layers of natural wood finishes and is shaped with gentle curves pointing upwards. The size reduces direct glare and improves visibility of the people on stage. With new carpet tile in organic patterns, improved lighting, a newly painted ceiling and structural supports, the sanctuary is a brighter, more welcoming space.
Similarly on the lower level, the fellowship area was also brightened by changing the dark orange carpet to a new carpet tile with a lighter organic pattern. Lighting was added and improved in the concrete coffered ceiling to illuminate the space. A single user restroom was modernized to meet accessibility standards. The mechanical system was upgraded to serve the facility better. Other floor finishes were contemporized and walls painted throughout the church. All of these enhancements will serve the congregation well for many years.
